What knowledge, skills and experiences have prepared you to serve on the Board?
I have a multitude of experience and expertise that makes me well-prepared to serve on the Board. My experience within the district gives me an in-depth understanding of school policies, curriculum, and the needs of both students and teachers. I am committed to strengthening public education for all learners. As a current SPED provider in Pearland ISD and the parent of a special needs student, I know firsthand the challenges students with disabilities face. I have spent the past 8 years navigating the ARD process ensuring my own child receives the support and accommodations they need. My experience within the district has also given me insight into how resources are allocated and the importance of making student-centered financial decisions. Daily I collaborate with my colleagues, I understand the importance of working alongside administrators and families to create a meaningful change. I am a skilled communicator and a bridge builder. Combining my personal and professional experience makes me a strong voice for our community.
Considering the PISD 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, which of the identified goals do you believe is most at risk if the proposed school voucher bill is enacted and the basic allotment per pupil remains unchanged? What is your suggestion to address?
If the proposed school voucher bill is enacted and the basic allotment per pupil remains unchanged, Goal 1: Student Academic Growth and Success would be most at risk. Vouchers will divert our public school funds, reducing resources that are available for our students. With the Texas basic allotment per student is stagnant, this could lead to larger class sizes, fewer instructional programs, and reduced support for students with special needs. Our schools serve all students, including those requiring special education services, bilingual instruction, and other accommodations. The private schools receiving vouchers are not held to the same accountability and do not have to accept all students, potentially leaving public schools with fewer resources for those who need them the most. This could also lead to a strain on retaining quality teachers and sustaining our academic programs such as our career and technical education (CTE), advanced placements (AP), and special education. When I am elected to the school board I will address these challenges head on. Collaborating with district leadership to prioritize funding toward core academic programs, student services, and teacher support while seeking additional grants and partnerships. I am committed to advocating for policies that protect public education and ensure that every child receives the resources and support they need to succeed. Together we must fight for school funding and ensure students in special education continue receiving the services they are entitled to receive under federal and state laws. I will continue to advocate for policies that keep our schools strong. Pearland ISD families deserve a trusted board member that is fully committed to the success of our students.
Recently many of the books that formed our collective educational experience have been banned in other Texas ISDs. Pearland ISD recently adopted state Penal Code 43.24 and approved a motion to resolve a complaint about a book. What is your personal view of what types of books should or shouldn’t be challenged?
In my personal opinion, I believe that a well-rounded education includes access to diverse literature that challenges students to think critically, fosters empathy, and reflects a variety of perspectives. Our schools should provide students with books that offer different viewpoints, cultures, and historical experiences. If we restrict access to certain books, we limit our student’s ability to engage with diverse topics and the ability to develop their own informed opinions. A diverse and inclusive library serves the entire student body. Any challenge to a book should go through a clear, fair process that includes educators, librarians, and community input rather than relying on broad legal statutes, which can be interpreted subjectively. Book selection should be handled through established educational policies rather than politically motivated bans. As a school board trustee, I will advocate for policies that protect access to literature while allowing responsible discussions about curriculum and library selections. Students deserve an education that equips them with critical thinking skills, not one that shields them from important but sometimes difficult conversations.
There have been recent lawsuits challenging portions of Section 504 as unconstitutional. If a portion or the entirety of Section 504 protections are removed, what is your commitment to students currently protected by Federal Law?
Sections 504 protections are personal for me, my son’s educational resources are protected through this section of the law. I am unwavering in my commitment to ensuring that all students, regardless of ability, receive the support and accommodations they need to thrive. If portions or the entirety of Section 504 protections were removed, I would advocate for our district to uphold these protections at the local level. As a board member, I would advocate to adopt policies that mirror the intent of Section 504. This will ensure students continue to receive necessary accommodations, modifications, and support services. This will also ensure students with disabilities receive equal opportunities in academics, extracurriculars, and school life. I am committed to ensuring students with disabilities have access to Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), intervention programs, and specialized instructional support. I am committed to working closely with parents, teachers, and support staff to create local safeguards that protect students, even in the absence of federal mandates.
What do you feel are the top priorities for Pearland ISD School Board within the next 2 years?
Our priorities should be student success, teacher support, and financial stability in the face of potential funding challenges. By exploring alternative funding sources, such as grants and partnerships we can protect our programs that support our students. We must address teacher workload and burnout by enhancing classroom support, professional development opportunities, and competitive pay and benefits. Finally, we must support our students by maintaining academic excellence and diverse learning opportunities. Protecting and expanding our CTE programs, advanced academics, and dual-credit opportunities prepares our students for college and careers. Enhancing STEM, arts, and extracurricular activities to engage students beyond the classroom. I am committed to putting students, teachers, and families first.
