How Does the Federal Budget Bill Impact Pearland?

Last week, H.R.1, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed the House of Representatives by a narrow margin of 215-214. Representatives Troy Nehls and Randy Weber were among those who voted in favor of the legislation. The bill now moves to the Senate for review and further consideration.

The Impact of the Proposed Budget on Our Community:

  • Affordable Care Act (ACA): This budget proposal would raise annual premiums for the 112,000 individuals covered under the ACA by an average of $420 in Congressional District 22. For example, a 60-year-old couple with an $85,000 annual income would see their health insurance costs increase by a staggering $13,617 per year.
  • Medicaid: In Congressional District 22, more than 76,000 residents rely on Medicaid, including 56,000 children and 14,000 seniors over 65. This budget threatens their access to healthcare, putting some of the most vulnerable members of our community at risk.
  • School Lunches: Over 900,000 students in Texas depend on school lunch programs to receive proper nutrition. If enacted, this budget would make it harder for students to access the meals they need to grow, learn, and thrive.
  • Pell Grants: One in three high school graduates receives a Pell Grant. If this budget passes, it will jeopardize the futures of more than 3,000 high school graduates in District 22, limiting their ability to afford higher education.
  • Federal Workers: The federal government employs over 6,000 residents in District 22—our neighbors, friends, and family members. With ongoing reductions in federal employment, their jobs—and livelihoods—are at serious risk.

This budget proposal poses real threats to healthcare, education, and economic stability in our district. It’s crucial to raise awareness and take action to protect these essential services.

This bill also contains many riders that would weaken the Judicial Branch defanging enforcement of rulings. The courts have served as the last line of defense against unjust federal immigration policies in recent months. From the last census, 19% of Pearland’s population immigrated to the US. As the State Department applies broad definitions in its Catch-and-Revoke Policy, checks from the Judicial Branch are essential to ensure the Executive Branch operates within the law.
