In The Face of Famine, Compassion Must Lead

Gaza is experiencing a full-blown famine. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), Gaza Governorate has entered Phase 5: Catastrophe, the highest level of food insecurity. Over 640,000 people are now facing starvation. An additional 1.14 million are in emergency conditions, and 396,000 are in crisis. The numbers are staggering, but the human toll is even more devastating.

Children are dying. Hospitals are overwhelmed. Families are going days without food. More than 20,000 children have been treated for acute malnutrition, and at least 16 children under five have died from hunger-related causes. The infrastructure collapse—over 70% destroyed—has left communities without access to clean water, electricity, or medical care. One in three Gazans is now going hungry.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called it a “humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions.” The World Health Organization, UNICEF, WFP, and FAO have jointly demanded an immediate ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access. But aid remains blocked, and political will is paralyzed.

So what can we do—from Pearland, Texas?
